In 2020, a basic, yet playable version of the game from 2015 was leaked. In 2019, it was confirmed that the game was still in development, but by August of that year, it was announced by THQ Nordic that Sumo Digital had been replaced by internal studio, Dambuster Studios. The game was expected to be delayed far past its previously scheduled "late 2016" release and was removed from the Steam store. Sumo Digital announced they had taken over development on March 9th, 2016, but did not mention a release date. Development was suspended in July 2015 when Yager was dropped from the project due to apparent creative differences between the studio and Deep Silver. First revealed at E3 2014, it was to be the second main entry into the Dead Island series. Singeplayer, multiplayer Dead Island 2 was the now cancelled original build of Dead Island 2, originally set to be developed by Yager and published by Deep Silver.
